1. When you call out to activate resources- if the wind is too high for aerial support, do you augment the land-based resources?
Yes and no. Air resources don't necessarily affect how many ground resources we use in the initial response. Depending on watershed levels, we will send the same amount of resources for the first alarm, then evaluate as the fire progresses. Not having air resources does change firefighting strategies, which then could change resource ordering in the later stages of combating the fire.
2. When will the pump station in Carbon Canyon be hardened? It has been 18 years since we realized it is a problem during the Freeway Complex Fire?
City staff has initiated the Carbon Canyon Booster Pump No. 2 Project (CIP No. 7470), having completed initial load testing, concept design, and survey documentation for the site. This information has been utilized to develop a bid package that will be posted to potential contractors for bidding on the project. It is anticipated that the bidding process will be completed this summer and that a contract will be presented to City Council for consideration of award in the fall. From there, the design-build team will provide a project schedule for implementation of the proposed booster pump station improvements.
3. What is the status of the Zone Zero guidelines?
Zone 0 guidelines are in process with the Board of Forestry and will likely be announced in September.
4. Will Brea consider enacting an ordinance to adopt Zone Zero if the guidelines are delayed?
At this time, we are not considering enacting Zone 0 early. It’s already in state law and we are just waiting for direction at this time. We will be implementing greater distances for defensible space in our code adoption at the end of this year.
5. So Cal Edison was in Olinda Village and was flying a drone to check lines and also review any growth over lines. Is the Brea Fire Department in touch with Edison?
Southern California Edison notifies the city when they have scheduled inspections of their lines but the city is not involved in their activities.
