Recycling Guide

Organic Waste Recycling Program Begins July 1

Beginning July 1, Brea residents will be able to dispose of food scraps and food soiled paper in their yard waste/organics carts. This updated enhancement to the residential curbside recycling program is part of the City’s commitment to comply with California Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), requiring all organic waste to be recycled instead of being disposed in the landfill.

It is crucial for residents to ensure they have all three carts (trash, recycle, and yard waste/organics) to comply with SB 1383. If you are missing any carts or have a damaged cart, contact Republic Services by calling 714-238-2444 or email ocrecycles@republicservices.com. If City and Republic Services records indicate your property is missing one or more cart streams, these carts may be delivered to your residence as early as this Summer.

Fireworks are Illegal in Brea

With the upcoming 4th of July holiday approaching, we want to remind you of Brea’s ban on fireworks. The sale, use, or discharge of all fireworks are prohibited in the City, even the “safe and sane” variety sold in other cities. Keeping safety in mind and reducing the risk of wildfires, new enforcement will be made more effective by the use of innovative strategies such as the Brea Police Department’s new Drone as First Responder (DFR) program. Fireworks are dangerous and can be harmful to you, your property, and your pets. They are a serious fire hazard as sparks from fireworks can travel to nearby homes or brush and ignite a fire. Help keep our community safe!

If you are able to identify the exact location of someone using fireworks, please report it to Brea Police Department's non-emergency line at 714-990-7911.

Mosquito Control Tips & Tricks from OC Vector

Are you tired of getting bitten by mosquitoes while enjoying a nice walk or relaxing on your porch with a cup of coffee? If so, you'll want to know some tips and tricks to keep these pesky insects out of your life.

One type of mosquito you should be aware of is the Aedes mosquito, also known as the ankle biter. These black and white striped mosquitoes are known for biting during the daytime and can be found in every city in Orange County. While the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) conducts wide area treatments, smaller sources of water around your patio, yard, or indoor spaces can also attract mosquitoes. These insects only need a small amount of water to complete their life cycle, so it's important for every resident to take an active role in mosquito control.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HOME AND YARD

  • Aedes mosquitoes thrive indoors and can lay eggs in and around containers, vases and even bamboo plants.
  • Keep plant saucers dry.
  • Keep your pet’s water dishes clean.
  • Don’t overwater your plants.
  • Use EPA certified mosquito repellent and use before going outside.
  • Wear long-sleeved clothing to prevent bites.
  • Connect with your neighbors and spread the word about mosquito prevention.

Don’t give mosquitoes a biting chance. Be diligent and make source reduction a weekly routine. For more information, visit MosquitoesSuck.org.
