Holiday Safety Tips from our Police and Fire Departments

The Brea Police Department wants to help you have a safe and cheerful holiday season. With increased shopping and travel over the next few months, keep these tips in mind.

  • Lock it. Take it. Keep it. – theft from vehicles is a highly reported crime during the holiday season; do not leave items of value in your car in plain sight.
  • Plan deliveries – to deter thefts, have packages delivered to a designated area like work or when you will be home.
  • Do not leave property unattended – do not place purses in shopping carts, leave a cell phone on a restaurant table, or leave a wallet on a counter when paying.
  • Protect your home – keep all doors and windows locked to decrease chances of being burglarized. Install exterior lighting and cameras. If traveling, ask a neighbor to watch your home. Put timers on interior and exterior lights. Stop newspaper, mail, and other deliveries. Sign up for a vacation house check.
  • Be aware of surroundings – do not be distracted in crowded area, personal belongings are at risk. Limit cell phone use in public places and don’t carry social security cards or passports.
  • Personal safety – park in well-lighted, well-traveled areas.
  • If you see something, say something – contact the Brea Police Department to report suspicious activity at (714) 990-7911.

Here are some reminders from the Brea Fire Department to keep your home fire safe this holiday season when choosing the right tree.

  • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
  • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk and remember to add water daily to the tree stand.
  • Keep the tree at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, candles, heat vents, or lights.
  • Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
  • Always turn off tree lights before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Recycle the tree when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage. Place outside to have the tree recycled.
