Don’t give mosquitoes a biting chance; join the OC Vector Control and Tip, Toss and Take Action this summer! The recent rains and now rising temperatures we are experiencing have led to perfect mosquito breeding conditions around our homes. It’s time to continue our shared responsibility in protecting public health.

As well as being a pest, mosquitoes can carry numerous diseases that can make people and animals sick. The disease of most concern in Southern California is the West Nile virus. Spread by mosquito bite, West Nile can cause flu like symptoms including fever, headache, and nausea. Gradation of the virus can lead to stroke-like symptoms, coma, paralysis and even death.
Orange County is also home to invasive Aedes mosquitoes, which can transmit Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Unfortunately, the Aedes mosquito now resides in every Orange County city.
Reduce your chances of getting bit by mosquitoes this summer by eliminating mosquito breeding sites and reducing your exposure to disease-carrying mosquitoes.
Tips for preventing mosquitoes:
- Inspect your property regularly for standing water, and tip or toss any containers filled with water at least once a week.
- Close all unscreened doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home or space; repair broken or damaged screens.
- Pour out water from potted plant saucers to eliminate mosquito breeding.
- Remove trash and clutter. This includes discarded tires, buckets, tarps and any other items that could collect water.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and opt for lighter colored clothing when spending time outdoors.
