***Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) Implementation Update***
The City of Brea, along with every jurisdiction in the State of California, is required by State law to implement an organic waste recycling program. California Senate Bill (SB 1383) requires reductions of organic waste in landfills as a part of a greater plan to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants, such as methane. In addition, the bill requires that all residential and commercial (multi-family & business) customers have in place a three-stream container system consisting of trash, mixed recycling, and organics (yard/food waste). The Brea City Council recently approved a restated and amended agreement with Republic Services to include the necessary programs for residents to comply with SB 1383.
Effective July 1, 2025, the residential trash and recycling cart service from Republic Services will be adjusted from $27.80 to $31.27. To comply with Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), all Brea residents must have trash, recycling, and organics carts with Republic Services. The adjusted rate supports compliance with SB 1383 and ensures the City receives the required waste collection and processing services.
